Savage Dragon

No. 4: Savage Dragon

First Published: July 1992 (Volume 1 – mini-series) | June 1993 (Volume 2 ongoing series)

Created by Image Comics’ co-founder Erik Larsen, Savage Dragon was initially about a super strong/durable green skinned cop in Chicago who fought super-powered gangsters. Dragon has been part of two super teams: Freak Force and The Liberty League. Savage Dragon is a unique title because Larsen allowed the characters to age and the status quo shifted several times. Dragon has faced parallel and dystopian worlds in addition to being a single father. The title currently stars Dragon’s son Malcolm.

Erik Larsen has introduced numerous support characters to the title over the years.  Only a few concepts such as Dart, Mighty Man, Super Patriot and Freak Force received spin-offs. To maintain quality control Larsen often wrote, co-wrote or edited the titles.  Larsen also relied upon creators such as Kurt Busiek (Astro City), Keith Giffen (Justice League International) and Robert Kirkman (The Walking Dead). Like Spawn and WildC.A.T.s, Savage Dragon also had a cartoon series during the 1990s. The cartoon ran for two seasons on the USA Network. Savage Dragon continues to be published through Image Comics; this is only original Image character that is still being written and drawn by its creator.
