No. 3: WildC.A.T.s (Covert Action Teams)

First Published: August 1992 (Volume 1)

WildC.A.T.s was created by artist/co-writer Jim Lee (X-Men artist extraordinaire) and writer Brandon Choi. The title had massive amounts of X-Men baked into its DNA along. WildC.A.T.s was the lead title in Jim Lee’s Wildstorm imprint (now owned by DC Comics). The book featured a team of alien warriors, human/alien hybrids, an android and a cosmic being waged a covert war against alien invaders (which included former Vice President Dan Quayle). Soon after Dan Quayle was defeated, WildC.A.T.s crossed over with one of Image’s other X-Men inspired teams Cyberforce.

Later writers included James Robinson (Starman) and Alan Moore (Batman: The Killing Joke). Jim Lee’s former Uncanny X-Men collaborator writer Chris Claremont also joined the book for two issues. James Robinson’s brief run provided a bit of characterization that some felt was initially lacking. Robinson helped to flesh out the backstory of several team members in the Team One: WildC.A.T.s two parter.  He also wrote one issue of the WildC.A.T.s/X-Men crossover and co-wrote Wildstorm Rising (the first Wildstorm crossover). Alan Moore was handed the baton after James Robinson departed. Moore also spit the team into two units; one team was on Earth and one was in outer space. WildC.A.T.s was briefly a Saturday morning cartoon on CBS. Characters from this title and other Wildstorm properties are slated to appear in The Wild Storm written by Warren Ellis (Stormwatch).
