The Guardians of the Galaxy film franchise has transformed Marvel miscreants such as Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket Racoon and Groot into household names. However this quintet is not the original incarnation of the Guardians of the Galaxy (GotG), nor is it the team’s entire roster. Marvel introduced the original version of GotG in Marvel Super-Heroes #18 (1969). The 1969 team was initially a ‘boy band’ but females were introduced later; this team’s adventures occurred in 31st century or in the 20th century (courtesy of time travel). The 1969 version of GotG did not receive an ongoing title until 1990; the book was initially overseen by writer/artist Jim Valentino until he departed Marvel to help form Image Comics.
The current incarnation of Guardians of the Galaxy was devised by writers Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning (DnA) and debuted in 2008. DnA launched the new version of GotG off the backs of two cosmic events: Annihilation and Annihilation: Conquest. The GotG comic franchise has been shepherded in recent years by writer Brian Michael Bendis. Under both regimes the title’s roster grew beyond the characters featured in both films.
