No. 8: Green Lantern (John Stewart) – DC Comics

John Stewart a member of the intergalactic police force known as the Green Lantern Corps first appeared in Green Lantern #87 (1971). Stewart was originally one of the back-up Green Lanterns for Earth’s space sector 2814. John eventually became a full-fledged member of the GL Corps; through the organization John met his wife Katma Tui. Sadly the unhinged ex-girlfriend of fellow Green Lantern Hal Jordan murdered Katma. The fallout from Katma’s death was explored in John’s solo series Green Lantern: Mosaic (1992). Stewart (along with nearly every Green Lantern) lost the ability to use their rings after Hal Jordan was possessed by an entity known as Parallax and destroyed their Central Power Battery. John Stewart was eventually recruited by the Darkstars, a rival intergalactic police force. The Green Lantern Corps was resurrected (along with Hal Jordan’s reputation) in the 2004 mini-series Green Lantern: Rebirth. John has been a key figure on the GL Corps since its return to prominence.

Like all Green Lanterns, John is able to use his ring to create constructs, fly and shoot energy beams. When John Stewart was first introduced, he was an architect. However Cartoon Network’s Justice League series changed John’s background and made him a member of the U.S. Marine Corps. John’s comic book origin has been retconned to incorporate both occupations. John Stewart has appeared on Young Justice in addition to other animated features and video games.
