Love it or Hate It: First Impressions: Arrow’s Backdoor Pilot for The Canaries (POLL)

Arrow, the DC Comic-based series that launched The CW’s Arrowverse penultimate episode on Tuesday. The episode and backdoor pilot, “Green Arrow & the Canaries,” didn’t actually feature Stephen Amell’s Oliver Queen (other than via flashbacks), but his presence was no less felt.

The episode starts with Laurel (Katie Cassidy) arriving in 2040 to save an heiress about to be kidnapped and killed. If her life isn’t saved Star City, where peace and prosperity have reigned since Oliver’s death, will collapse into chaos within a year.

Laurel finds Dinah (Juliana Harkavy), who has taken up residence in the future post-Crisis. Laurel convinces Dinah of the threat and the duo are off to recruit Mia Smoak/Queen (Katherine McNamara). Mia is celebrating her graduation from college and doesn’t remember either of them. Laurel quickly forces Mia to remember her life pre-Crisis with the help of one of Cisco’s (Carlos Valdes) gadgets.

Mia isn’t fully on-board with Laurel’s plan to find her socialite friend, but the longer the hunt goes on the more she finds herself embracing her father’s legacy as Green Arrow.

“Green Arrow & the Canaries” was a strong back-door pilot. It brought together two longtime Arrow favorites and added to the mythos of Mia, whose time on the show has been significantly shorter by comparison. We won’t spoil the cliffhanger, but it certainly left us wanting to see more.
