A childhood classic is finally getting the live action treatment. Elizabeth Banks has been cast as Ms. Frizzle in The Magic School Bus film, per Variety.

Ms. Frizzle is the teacher and adventure coordinator for all the children in her class. “The Magic School Bus” was originally a Scholastic book series by author Joanna Cole. The book became a classic animated TV show on PBS in the 1990s. The series tells the story of Ms. Frizzle and her class as they go on field trips in their “magic” yellow school bus that transforms into a plane, submarine, spaceship or surfboard.

Banks will take on the lead role, and produce the movie with Max Handelman for Brownstone Productions. Universal Pictures will co-produce the film. Scholastic Entertainment’s president and chief strategy officer Iole Lucchese expresses optimism for the project. “We are delighted to bring to life the iconic Ms. Frizzle and her zest for knowledge and adventure in a fresh new way that inspires the next generation of kids to explore science and supports the dedicated teachers who help make science real and accessible for young learners every day.”

This will be the first live action adaptation of The Magic School Bus.
