His Dark Materials returns for its second season in November and we’re getting even more details on the upcoming dramatic season.
HBO dropped a new teaser for and there is a ton to take in. “The Great War” is the major hook for Season 2 and it is reinforced when Lyra (Dafne Keen) is told “The fate of many worlds may rest on you.”
World War motifs are everywhere, with submarines, war dirigibles, infantry and The Magisterium on Lyra’s world.
Dafne’s quest for answers and to save multiple worlds interests with Will (Amir Wilson), who we saw on a contemporary Earth in Season 1 and it appears the two will spend a good chunk of Season 2 together.
A witch is seen talking about who we assume is Lyra, saying “If this is the Great War, she will be needed.”
We’re also told, “The bearer of the knife will have their own task and that could put the person in great danger.” Is that person Lyra or someone else? We will only find out in Season 2.
Meanwhile, the show’s villains Mrs. Coulter (Ruth Wilson) and Carlo (Ariyon Bakare) get major play in the teaser. Mrs. Coulter is torturing witches, but it appears she is also being haunted by “great evil.” Carlo continues to be the show’s shadowy figure, lurking about.
The official His Dark Materials description for Season 2 is below.
Lord Asriel has opened a bridge to a new world, and, distraught over the death of her best friend, Lyra follows Asriel into the unknown. In a strange and mysterious abandoned city she meets Will, a boy from our world who is also running from a troubled past. Lyra and Will learn their destinies are tied to reuniting Will with his father but find their path is constantly thwarted as a war begins to brew around them. Meanwhile, Mrs. Coulter searches for Lyra, determined to bring her home by any means necessary.
