As movie theaters slowly begin to reopen, the films and box office numbers are returning. SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run kept the seats full and earned the top spot in Canada, according to Deadline.
The majority of Canada’s top movie theaters finally threw the doors open, and let the reels play this past weekend. SpongeBob earned 900K this past weekend! It is the first brand new major film to debut in the theater since Trolls: World Tour a few months ago.
In other box office news, Russell Crowe’s Unhinged took the number two spot pulling in $582K. The Shia LaBeouf led The Tax Collector came in third with $203.7K. This film actually clutched the top spot in the U.S. The domestic box office sales are normally a combination of U.S. and Canada theaters.
Chris Aronson, head of Paramount’s domestic distribution, expresses his optimism about the resurgence of films. “I’m excited with the marketplace open and that people are going to the movies.” Hopefully, this is all a move in the right direction.
