Doogie Howser is getting a re-imagining with Doogie Kamealoha, M.D. at Disney Plus, Deadline reports.
The series received an immediate 10 episode straight-to-series pick up and is going into production later this year. It will be written by Kourtney Kang, whose work includes How I Met Your Mother and Fresh Off the Boat.
This new show will feature a female lead and is described as,
“Set in modern-day Hawaii, the 10-episode comedy follows Lahela “Doogie” Kameāloha, a mixed race 16-year-old girl, juggling a budding medical career and life as a teenager. Guiding Lahela (and also complicating things) is her family, including her spit-fire Irish mother who’s also her supervisor at the hospital, and her Hawaiian “Local Boy” father struggling to accept that his daughter is no longer his little girl.“
The original Doogie Howser starred Neil Patrick Harris and aired on ABC from 1989 to 1993. Since his child-star role on the show he has starred in such series as How I Met Your Mother and voiced Peter Parker in the 2003 Spider-Man animated series. He played the villain in 2008’s Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, a miniseries short, opposite of Nathan Fillion. Between 2017 and 2019 he starred in Netflix’s A Series of Unfortunate Events.
