The three-part mini-series is an adaptation of the 1939 novel by Rumer Godden. It is the story of a group of nuns who are tasked with setting up a convent at a remote clifftop palace known as the ‘House of Women’ in the Himalayas that holds dark secrets.
“When the young nuns of St. Faith attempt to establish a mission there, its haunting mysteries awaken forbidden desires that seem destined to repeat a terrible tragedy. During the latter years of British rule in India, ambitious young nun Sister Clodagh heads a mission to a remote part of the Himalayas. The palace of Mopu has been donated by General Toda Rai, who hopes the Sisters of St. Faith will rid the ‘House of Women’ of unhappy memories connected to his late sister, Srimati.“
Black Narcissus also stars Gemma Arterton (Sister Clodagh), Harry Potter’s Jim Broadbent (Father Roberts) and American Hustle’s Alessandro Nivola (Mr. Dean).
The novel was originally adapted in 1947 into an Oscar-winning film and starred Deborah Kerr.
Black Narcissus is one of two remaining credits featuring Diana Rigg that have yet to premiere. The other is Last Night in Soho.
All three episodes of Black Narcissus will air on FX on Monday, November 23 and be available the next day on Hulu.
