A fresh familiar voice is headed to a new Disney animated film. Kelly Marie Tran joins the voice cast of Disney’s Raya and the Last Dragon, per Entertainment Weekly.
Tran will voice the title character of Raya. She replaces Cassie Steele in the role. The story is set in Kimandra, a fantasy world full of fighters and mythical creatures. Raya is a fearless warrior who attempts to save an entire realm from the clutches of evil. Sisu (Awkwafina) is a a rare water dragon who has the ability to morph into a human.
Don Hall and Carlos López Estrada occupy the director’s chairs for the film. Qui Nguyen and Adele Lim penned the script. The film’s original release was in November, but it has since pushed back. The new debut date is March 12, 2021.
Tran is coming off a pretty good 2019. She appeared in Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker, and has Hulu’s Monsterland coming up! Importantly, she is the first Southeast Asian American to lead a Disney animated film
