Star Trek: Discovery Casts Transgender and Non-Binary Actors

A step in the right direction for inclusion! CBS All Access’ Star Trek: Discovery casts one Transgender, and one Non-Binary actor in the newest season per The Hollywood Reporter.

Blu Del Barrio steps into the role of non-binary character, Adira. This is Del Barrio’s first role on television! They make history by being Star Trek’s first non-binary character! Adria is described as “highly intelligent, confident and self-assured beyond their years.” Adria will make fast friends with Lt. Commander Paul Stamets (Anthony Rapp) and Dr. Hugh Culber (Wilson Cruz).

Ian Alexander also makes his by being the first Transgender actor on Star Trek. Alexander will portray Gray! Gray is “empathetic, warm and eager to fulfill his lifelong dream of being a Trill host.” However, an unexpected hang up causes him to change his initial approach.

Showrunner Michelle Paradise speaks on the show’s newest additions! “Star Trek has always made a mission of giving visibility to underrepresented communities because it believes in showing people that a future without division on the basis of race, gender, gender identity or sexual orientation is entirely within our reach.
