Get Over Here! Entertainment Weekly dropped the first official photos of the upcoming Mortal Kombat film!
It’s been nearly 25 years since the last Mortal Kombat film was in theaters. Mortal Kombat Annihilation severely underperformed at the box office, and the film was widely panned. All plans for the third film in the franchise were scrapped after the sequel to 1995’s Mortal Kombat flopped.
Now, the popular 1990’s video game is getting a modern live action reboot! The new film is in the can, and a few pictures from the project have hit the internet. Fan favorites Sub Zero (Joe Taslim), Scorpion (Hiroyuki Sanada), Sonya Blade (Jessica McNamee), Major Jackson “Jax” Briggs (Mehcad Brooks), Kano (Josh Lawson), Raiden (Tadanobu Asano), Shang Tsung (Chin Han), Liu Kang (Ludi Lin), Kung Lao (Max Huang), and Mileena (Sisi Stringer) are all featured in the film. Additionally, a new character Cole Young (Lewis Tan) will make his debut. His background is extremely similar to original game character Johnny Cage.
In one photo, Sub-Zero is shown making a weapon out of ice! With today’s technology, the ice looks very realistic. In another shot, Sub-Zero is showing fighting against his arch nemsis Scorpion. Naturally, it’s a bloody battle.
Sonya Blade is doing what she does best and kicking butt! It appears she may have gotten the better of her sworn enemy Kano. The red-eyed villain also gets a solo shot. Sonya’s partner Jax is using his cybertronic arms to easily lift a heavy rock.
The final shot is of newcomer Cole Young. He’s shown in what appears to be a martial arts fight. His portrayer, Tan, gives a bit on insight into the character. Cole is “a washed-up MMA fighter who used to be a champion, who used to believe in himself, who used to have a lot of hope in his career.” Young will find a new purpose while participating in Mortal Kombat.
Simon McQuoid directs the new film which will be available in theaters and on HBO Max on April 16!
