The Shadow and Bone fantasy book series is coming to life on Netflix! The streamer dropped the first Shadow and Bone trailer!

The source material comes from the novel of the same name by Leigh Bardugo. It’s known as the Grisha trilogy. The live action series will debut on April 23! Eric Heisserer serves as show creator.

The trailer begins with someone on a horse running towards the shadow. The voiceover informs the audience “a scar on the map has torn our country in two.” The book and tv shows main character, Alina Starkov (Jessie Mei Li), appears and walks towards a ship ready to set sail. She is met with hesitation, but eventually ends up on the boat headed towards the shadow.

The ship enters the thick black shadow and naturally, all hell breaks loose. There are giant monsters, winged creatures attacking from the sky, and death all around. Suddenly, a extremely bright light fills the screen and seemingly kills the creatures. Later, Alina is brought before General Kirigan/The Darkling (Ben Barnes) to explain her story.

He asks her to lift her sleeve as he cuts her with a ring knife. There is no blood, but simply light underneath her skin. He asks what she is, and another bright light is seen emanating from the building. The trailer continues to introduce a war, nobility, and ultimately the battle for survival among the rich and poor.

As Alina assures General Kirigan she is merely a map maker, he proposes the two change the world together. The threat of the shadow still looms. Will they be able to neutrilize the terror?
